Facebook Updates have an effect on rankings and search, REPRINT

REPRINT by Mickey Lacasse, Cape Cod Video Search
                                         508-317-1806

                                                 http://www.capecodvideosearch.com/

Facebook announced a few Platform updates, including updates to the Live Stream Plugin, "liked" articles appearing in search results, and improvements to real-time updates.

The second one is in line with a feature the company was testing that we mentioned recently. "Consistent with how we treat other Open Graph object types, we’ve introduced the ability to see articles shared by your friends in the search typeahead," says Facebook's Namita Gupta. "For instance, if your friend clicks 'Like' on an article at a news site, the article will appear in your News Feed and can now also surface in the search typeahead."

Is Facebook becoming more of a factor in search? Share your thoughts.

The results, as AllFacebook described upon finding the feature being tested, showed content based on the number of likes and the number of friends who liked the particular object. "The search results have now become dramatically more relevant with the inclusion of recent news articles, something that previously wasn't accessible via Facebook's open graph search results," AllFacebook's Nick O'Neill had said. "Currently, the search results only appear within the drop down from Facebook’s search box, however I’d assume that this will eventually shift to Facebook's search area, which has yet to undergo a significant overhaul."

Either way, there is clearly a direct connection between likes and search now. It's essentially Facebook's version of PageRank.

Search Marketing Implications

The most important thing to keep in mind here is something that has always been true about doing well in search: create good content. If you create compelling content, people will like it and if they use Facebook, they will "like" it. Considering Facebook has over half a billion users, that has pretty big implications.

Facebook has one major thing going for it that search engines don't - the ability to make content go viral. The more people "like" a piece of content, the more people will share it with others, and the more potential "likes" it can get. The more "likes" it gets, the more it will be exposed through Facebook search.

I can tell you that "likes" are a lot easier to get than links. If for no other reason, it is just much easier to hit a button to "like" a piece of content than it is to reference it in a blog post - and the majority of people probably aren't bloggers. This has huge potential as long as people continue to use Facebook, and those people actually use the Facebook search box.

The biggest obstacle here as far as Facebook-based search marketing, is that people generally don't think of Facebook as a place to search for content. However, the more relevant content they see in those times they do use the search box, the more likely they are to use that search box more in the future. Facebook has already been growing in terms of search market share. This is going to be a very important thing to keep an eye on.

If you haven't spent much time on a Facebook strategy, now's probably a good time to start thinking a little harder about it. Don't have a blog? You may want to reconsider.

Things get even more interesting when you consider Facebook Places as part of the equation, as well as examples of "liking" physical objects (products). Facebook has big plans for Facebook Credits, which could conceivably become a PayPal-like option used for online purchases all over the web. How attractive do you think it will be for consumers to simply have to log-in via Facebook to make a purchase rather than complete some long form with their credit card info every time they want to make a purchase? How critical will a Facebook strategy be at that point?

Remember, Facebook also just released that Page discovery tool, which should prove great for Page "likes".

As far as the other updates...

"We recently began supporting real-time updates for page updates and the following object property types: relationship status, significant other, timezone and locale," adds Gupta. "To support developers building with users' location data, we've also introduced the ability to subscribe to check-ins. Like all objects available via subscriptions, developers can only retrieve updates to check-in data after a user has the granted permission."

Facebook is rolling out the Live Stream plugin for all new and existing apps, as a way "to be more consistent with users’ expectations and other social plugins." All posts can now be seen in real-time by other people viewing the Live Stream. Facebook is also adding the option for users not to share their comments on Facebook. In addition, it now supports multiple Live Streams on one site by specifying a URL, which will link status updates to their respective pages.

The Top 7 Facebook and Twitter Strategies That Are Working Right Now

One of the great things about the work I do is that I have a bird's eye view of what's working and what's not when it comes to social media. Every so often I like to give sort of a "state of the union" on Facebook and Twitter best practices, because as I am sure you know, social media is constantly growing, changing and evolving.

As you'll see, some of the strategies I am recommending are tried and true-they have been working since day one and will probably continue to for the considerable future.

However, there may be a few here that you've never considered-or may even be surprised by. But they are what I see as being the biggest keys to success and results for business owners on the two hottest social networks on the planet: Facebook and Twitter.

1. Find your peeps.

What this means is that you want to become part of the community you are looking to serve. The first step of course is to be clear on whom it is you want to serve and what problem you are solving for them. Once you know that, the goal is to go where they are hanging out.

There are specific tools you can use to easily find and interact with your target market. Two of my favorites for Twitter are wefollow.com and search.twitter.com.

2. Concentrate on conversing and building relationships, instead of broadcasting and selling.

One of the most common yet biggest mistakes that people make when they are first introduced to social media is to focus on pushing their product or service in a spammy way. That approach fails miserably in social media because most people are there to build relationships and interact.

There's nothing wrong with letting others know what's going on with you or your business sometimes--just be sure to intersperse your tweets or Facebook updates with some two-way conversation.

3. Use a Facebook personal profile AND a Facebook business page TOGETHER.

This might be a little "controversial" - and don't get me wrong, your business SHOULD have a Page -- but when you have a personal profile, you are able to interact with other people much more easily.

As a business Page, a Page can't go comment on another person's Wall or profile or in their Group or on THEIR Page AS that Page. You are really contained inside the space of your own Page. This might be something to consider because a lot of the magic of Facebook and the relationship-building and rapport-building comes from that ability to interact.

4. Cross-post and cross promote.

Once you've decided to make social media a part of your marketing strategy, you don't want to keep it to yourself.

There are lots of ways to spread the word, for example: you'll want to advertise your social presence on your blog, add links to your email signature and use one social media platform to post to another.

5. Use a social media dashboard like Hootsuite and other productivity tools to accomplish more in less time.

Hootsuite.com is my hands-down favorite, free social media tool, and the reason why is because it does so many different things. For example, you can use it to update many social networks at once, including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn; you can use it to pre-schedule tweets and status updates and more.

"please leave your comments and links and I will get right back to you"
                                                       Mickey

6. Get them on the list.

In most cases, people aren't going to buy from you right off of sites like Facebook and Twitter. You need to shift your thinking from "how can I get this person to buy from me or hire me now?" to "how can I bring this person into my community and strengthen the relationship with them on an ongoing basis?"

One of the best ways to do this is to offer people a way to provide their email address via your blog or website so that you have permission to keep in touch and build an ongoing relationship with them.

7. Measure and track your social media results.

Measuring the ROI of social media isn't exactly cut and dry. I am often asked how you can tell whether the time you've spent on social media activities is really making a difference.

Some of the best metrics? Blog comments, blog subscribers, newsletter subscribers, social media profile engagement, number of friends and followers and website traffic to name a few.

No matter who your target market is, you can be sure that at least some segment of them is using social media. The important thing is to understand that social media is a great way to get in front of that target audience.

And remember, you may not be able to equate your interactions to dollars now, but what you are doing is planting seeds which can have big payoffs later on.

Most of the strategies I've mentioned here aren't really "strategies" unless you keep applying them over time-so stick with it to reap those results you've been searching for.

Generating Traffic to your Social Media Sites

508-317-1806

                                                              Reprint By Mickey Lacasse

Low Cost Social Media Traffic Generators

Writing by Nick Stamoulis

Traffic to a website can often times take a great deal of time depending on what your timeline and expectations are. Everyone wants traffic fast but often times that is easier said than done. Pay per click advertising can be very expensive and search engine optimization is long term, so where do you start?

When approached strategically social media can often times bring in traffic fairly quickly at a relatively low cost compared to things like pay per click advertising. If you have a little extra time on your hands writing some content, connecting with like minds and pushing your message can entice very qualified visitors to come over to your website to see more.

Here are a few ideas on how social media can pull in traffic relatively quickly to your website:

LinkedIn: LinkedIn can be a nice gem for your business if you know and understand how to approach it. Find the groups in your industry and start becoming part of the conversation. Launch a blog on your website and use that content to push through the pages of your specific LinkedIn groups. Start a discussion? The LinkedIn groups allow you to be able to start a discussion where others can chime in and put in their 2 cents.

Twitter: It doesn’t take very long to start following other like minded people on Twitter. Unless you are a big brand or a celebrity people will most likely not start following you for any reason, give them a reason to want to hear from you. Start following them first and over time people will follow you back increasing traffic to your website. Do this every few days if you can and you will slowly start to see a great deal of that Twitter traffic start finding its way back to your website.

Social Bookmarking: I know, this is an ancient (maybe a few years old!) form of spreading your online message but it still works. You don’t have to be a power user on Digg or Stumbleupon to get some good traffic coming in. Stumbleupon often times can sporadically pull in heaping amounts of traffic you just have to take two minutes and drop your link into their website.

Social media is not expensive but does require a little bit of time which should be a bit more appealing than dropping thousands of dollars in pay per click advertising. Take a little time each day and you will quickly see that traffic making its way over to your website.

Please leave your comments and links here and I will be glad to respond!

How to Install the Facebook Like Button On Every Page of Your Site

Facebook is the most rapidly growing social networking platform, with over 400 million active users (and climbing quickly). With so many users and with people's preoccupation with Facebook, it makes sense to use the "Like" button to help virally spread the word about what you do to others who are interested in you.

Once the button is on your page, any time a Facebook user visits your site and clicks on it, a link to your page is added to their activity stream. Then, all of their friends can see that link, and if interested, click on it and be sent directly to your page. When that second person clicks on the button, the button is personalized for them by showing which of their friends have already clicked it. And then, when your friends click on it, a link to your page gets added to their stream, as well. Easy viral marketing!

Here's how you can install the "Like" button on your site:

1. Visit the Facebook page to create the button, found here: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like

2. Copy the URL of the page where you want to install the button to the form in Facebook.

3. Pick your features. This is where you choose your layout style, whether you want to show faces, the width of the button (the default 475 pixels is fine), what you want the button to say (Like or Recommend), the font of the button, and the color scheme.

4. Click "Get the Code." You'll discover you have two options here, an i-frame or JavaScript (HFBML) version. Here are the difference between the two:

Because the content inside the i-frame is hosted by Facebook, Facebook can determine whether the user is logged in or not using a cookie. If the person is logged in to Facebook, the information in the i-frame is personalized for that user, like showing a list of your friends who have also "liked" the page. If you're not logged in, you'll be prompted to log in or join.

The JavaScript version offers some extras. When you use this code, clicking the Like button will also show the profile pictures of your friends who have clicked on the Like button, as well as gives your visitors the chance to add a comment to the link when they click on the Like button. There's also some extra programming involved if you select this option.

I suggest you use the i-frame because it's easier to configure.

5. Highlight and copy the button code provided on the page for you.

6. Return to the page where you want the button to appear. In your HTML editor, you need to paste the code where you want it to appear on your page. As you look at the code, you'll see that it references the page you selected on which your code will appear. You'll also notice that the width of the box is set to 475 pixels (if you chose that width at setup) but there's no height set. You might want to set the height at 75 pixels so that the button doesn't take over your page.

7. Publish and "like" your page. Save the page with the code and publish it to your site. Go to your updated page and "Like" your page. Your page must be accessible to any viewer. If the content is password-protected (like in a membership site), an error message will appear when someone clicks the "Like" button on a page.

Connect the pages of your blog or web site with Facebook via the "Like" button. Share them with your friends and followers and watch the viral marketing happen!

Bing st to power Yahoo Search

By August of this year (2010) the Yahoo search engine will be powered by BING.

In order to take full advantage of this new feature you will need to greate a yahoo e-mail address and follow the direction provied once you do this. As the combined bing/Yahoo will take on more importance in the Search Engine world, doing this early and optimizing your website for this new search engine takes on greater significance.

Establishing a presence on Bing maps is a good 1st step, although a little cumbersome because they use snail mail to send back a verification link, it is well worththe effort.

An account is also needed on yahoo maps and of course the Goggle maps which can be accessed only if you have a google account. You can add pics, videos and reviews to your google maps listing, as well as coupons and event schedules. Google Places which gives you access to google maps is a key componet to SEO and Search Engine Marketing. I make sure all of my clients have those listings established and I add to them every chance I get.

SEO Tips to Double Rankings, Traffic and Conversion

by SEO Design Solutions
Posted on May 17, 2010

The only thing better than one search result in the top 3 positions in Google is two search results from a double ranking. This SEO tip works from pushing a competitor off the first page to broadening your websites keyword funnel and double traffic and conversions.

Two Results are Better than One

I read somewhere that 87% of search engine traffic for a given keyword is allocated from occupying the #1 position in the search engine results page. If you understand SEO, then this post will share a quick method to double your SERP position and the likelihood of improving keyword conversions, once you have reached the Mecca for a specific search term.

SEO is predicated on one simple premise, rankings; in order for SEO to be effective, it must produce ranking on the first page in search engines. Not only is this the crowning achievement of search engine optimization, but once you achieve a top 10 position, then you can pull other keywords into the spotlight as a result of strategic linking. We often refer to this as the buddy system for lateral linking.

Search engine algorithms pay particular attention to individual pages capable of offsetting all of the other inconsistencies of competitor's web pages and deem one page worthy above all others for any given search term.
Obviously the metrics are unique for each market, keyword or niche, but the reality is the same, once a top 3 or more importantly #1 or #1, 2 and 3 positions represent in Google. I have mentioned before, the fastest way to get a top 10 position in Google is to get a link from a website already ranking in the top 10 for that keyword.

It does not matter if that link is provided from your own website or another website, rankings are by the page and there is a daisy-chain effect of linking pages together that fuses the pages through a dynamic give and take relationship (based on citation). This citation can provide the algorithmic equivalents of trust needed for the newly linked page to jump in line past others duking it out for that keyword.

Depending on the competitiveness of the keyword or key phrase and the thresholds inherent to the barrier to entry; the time required to initiate a campaign, create all of the necessary content, inbound links and citation from other web 2.0 properties, RSS feeds and social bookmarking sites divided by the amount of time you invest managing or outsourcing the various components involved determine your profitability and return on investment.

With this in mind, from a tactical perspective, it's better to leverage the SERP positioning you already have, than look outside of your own website for off page ranking factor. If you understand the power of a #1 position, then you can replicate this next simple SEO tip.

1. Identify all current #1 positions in Google for keywords.
2. Validate they still exist.
3. Use Keyword Research to find "related keywords" based on the #1 ranking
4. Link from the page that ranks to a new page (using similar anchor text or overlapping keywords to promote the new page).
5. Let the new page get indexed, then check the SERPs

Identify: My favorite tool for this is SEM Rush, but if you don't want to use this, there are other programs out there, or even Google webmaster tools can show you your websites top ranking SERP positions when you log in.
Either way, this is your base, so, identify the keywords which could represent hub status for your SEO campaign and pass along the power of ranking to other pages in your website.

Validate: Check to see if you still hold the #1 position, even a top 3 will do, but this tactics works better if you are at the helm of a particular search phrase.

Keyword Research: You should be able to gauge whether or not the keyword is profitable for you based on the frequency of hits and the type of traffic you garner as a result. You can always look through Google Analytics or whichever analytics package you have to assess the keywords that represent the highest percentage of traffic to your website.

Once you know what those keywords are, then use keyword research to find stemmed semantic variations that also fall under the same category or keyword cluster. Those related keywords will become the new focal point for step 4 *linking.

Linking: The closer the shingles (groups of keywords) the more effective this technique is. You can call this padding the search results (if you use similar exact match titles, tags or content), or you can pass this ranking factor along to help synonymous terms.

Simply go back and edit the page ranking in the #1 position and add a link to the new target page (with the keyword you intend the target page to rank for as the anchor text). Then, the authority from the page in the #1 position will group the new page under its umbrella and pull that page into the spotlight.

When the new page gets crawled and the old page reveals the connectivity between the two, typically a double SERP position occurs or a double position accompanies by jump links, breadcrumbs or the [+] with additional search results for that keyword appear in Google to showcase the degree of relevance your website has for the said term.

You can then build additional deep links from other sites or addition internal links to the newly dubbed page. As a result, you should see buoyancy for bother pages for multiple keyword variations related to the parent keyword cluster.

With this simple tip you can double your conversions by increasing your websites semantic array of keywords it appears for. Obviously you will know which keywords and traffic is most lucrative for your business model, but this technique is priceless for creating controlled keyword stemming if you understand the vast implications underlying its premise.

There are 3 main ways to improve website traffic. They are: Visibility, accessibility, maintenance. Each of these brings something to the tally, but when combined, they provide a website owner with about the best net he can cast in the world of potential site visitors.

How do these aspects work and how do they work together to improve website traffic? Well, it all rests upon a simple premise:

A website doesn't exist suspended in a vacuum. Websites are part of a dynamic and trend-changing world. The biggest mistake site owners make is that they leave the site to fend off for itself once they have created it.

How is this bad? Look at it this way.

Sites need to be visible, accessible, and well maintained. And most important, a website needs traffic to make sales. By not updating your site and by leaving it to 'die' a slow death in the back alleys of cyberspace, you aren't doing anything to improve website traffic and to help your site survive.

Your site needs to be visible in search engine pages; it needs to be easily accessed; and it needs to be maintained to provide a contributive experience for the visitor.

Think of it as a garden. If you don't prune and weed (i.e., maintenance), the road to the garden will be overgrown and no one will be able to get into the garden (i.e., accessibility).

Once your entry path has disappeared behind a maze of plants and weeds, nobody will even see it and everyone will bypass it without even knowing it is there (visibility).

With these 3 aspects in mind, here are a few tips and pointers as to how you can maintain the accessibility and visibility of your website in cyberspace and improve website traffic to make sure that you are getting traffic and visitors regularly.

- Keywords
Choosing the correct keywords are vital in order to improve website traffic. It pays to choose keywords carefully, because it is based on those same keywords that your site may or may not come up listed in a search engine page.

Figure out which keywords are best associated with your website. You also need to think of how people may think of your site, and thus decide which keywords they are most apt to use.

Next, run the keywords in a search engine to decide if they are good or not (based on the results you get). Find out the ones that are most relevant and apply them to your website.

- Directories
A lot of people underestimate the traffic-sending power of Internet directories. While not as popular as search engines, this is a sure way to improve website traffic.

Furthermore, being listed in directories help to boost your search engine result placement, which will definitely improve website traffic.

- SEO optimization
There are many ways to make sure that your website is optimized for search engines, too many to be listed here as a matter of fact. But through properly optimizing your website you are sure to improve website traffic.

- Pages
Make sure your pages are good and ready to be viewed. This is as simple but many times overlooked way to improve website traffic. A good tip where pages are concerned is to title each page separately. Adding unique descriptions for each page also helps here, as then the site is not seen as a big bundle
of same titled and described pages.

-Open Directory Project
The Open Directory Project is a place that a lot of people don't deign to pay attention to. However this can be a good way to improve website traffic by increasing your visibility.

- Yahoo directory
